Life is short. It is like a vapor. It can be here one second and gone the next. That is the timeless message of one of the greatest leaders of all time.
Anything you pursue, whether it be hard work, education, riches, power or pleasures as an end in itself is meaningless according to this great sage. I love his final push, as purposefully recorded in Ecclesiastes:
Now all has been heard: here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commands, for this is the whole duty of man (Ecc. 12:13).
Are we so busy, so distracted and so deceived by all the stuff going on around us that we forget to make the most of our time? Does our lifestyle; our choices and our relationships reflect the awareness that life truly is short and God is truly great?
Pause for a moment and ask what really matters in the grand scheme of things. Let’s make sure that we haven’t made mountains into mole hills, or taken mole hills and made them into mountains.
May the Lord help us to live well with a heart of devotion to fear Him and to keep His commands in all that we are and do!
